Rococo wallpaper or 'Hogstatorpet' from our 'Historical Wallpaper Collection' is a wallpaper that dates back to approximately 1870. It ties in very well with the mixture of styles of the late nineteenth century. The pattern is dense, the flowers are slightly chunky and associated with Rococo ornamentation. At this period, the colours were often muted and dark, with elements of gold.
Our Rococo wallpaper or 'Hogstatorpet' as it is know in Swedish came to be known as Hogstatorpet as it was was found on the wall of a pantry in a tiny cottage called 'Hogstatorpet' on a little hill in the middle of Vikbolandet in Sweden.
The industrial revolution really gave the wallpaper industry a new lease of life in the late nineteenth century. New wallpaper factories were springing up and wallpapers became cheaper and more common even in simple homes. This was also when wallpapers came into kitchens - which had never been papered before. It became easier and easier to update your home and people papered their walls more often. The people at the Hogstatorpet homestead liked to redecorate. We can tell from the many layers of wallpaper on top of each other!
