Can I apply wallpaper over existing wallpaper?

Technically, you can, but we don’t recommend it. Ultimately the decision depends on your expectations. If you’re aiming for a long-lasting, professional-looking finish, removing the old wallpaper is always the better option. However, if you're looking for a quick refresh and don’t mind potential imperfections, wallpapering over wallpaper might work—but it's not ideal.

Why shouldn’t I wallpaper over wallpaper?

❌ The old wallpaper may not be securely attached – If the existing wallpaper is peeling or bubbling, your new wallpaper will struggle to stick properly.
❌ Seams and textures can show through – Patterns, seams, or raised textures from the old wallpaper can create bumps under the new layer.
❌ It can make future removal even harder – Layering wallpaper makes it twice as difficult to remove later, as you’ll have to strip both layers.
❌ Adhesion issues – Some wallpapers have a vinyl or washable coating that prevents new wallpaper from sticking properly.

When is it possible to wallpaper over wallpaper?

✅ The existing wallpaper is smooth, securely attached, and in good condition – No peeling, no bubbles, and no damaged areas.
✅ The old wallpaper is not vinyl or heavily textured – Vinyl surfaces can repel glue, making it difficult for the new wallpaper to adhere.
✅ You apply a wallpaper primer – This helps create a proper surface for adhesion, but it’s still not as reliable as applying wallpaper to a properly prepped wall.
🚨 Even if you meet all these conditions, wallpapering over wallpaper is still a risk, and results may not be as long-lasting.

What’s the best way to do it?
If you decided to wallpaper over wallpaper:
1️⃣ Check that the existing wallpaper is firmly attached – Secure any loose edges with adhesive and remove any damaged sections.
2️⃣ Smooth out any seams or raised patterns – Sand down any noticeable textures or overlaps.
3️⃣ Apply a wallpaper primer – This improves adhesion and prevents moisture from the new paste loosening the old wallpaper.
4️⃣ Use paste-the-wall wallpaper if possible – This reduces the amount of extra moisture applied to the old wallpaper.
5️⃣ Test a small section first – Make sure the new wallpaper adheres properly before doing the entire wall.
