Sealing your walls before wallpapering isn’t always necessary, but in many cases, it can make a huge difference in how well your wallpaper adheres and how smooth the final result looks.
We highly recommend sealing your walls if:
✔️ Your walls are highly absorbent (e.g., fresh plaster, drywall, or porous surfaces).
✔️ You're wallpapering over previously painted surfaces, especially with semi-gloss or gloss paint.
✔️ You're using paste-the-paper wallpaper, as sealing helps prevent the paste from soaking into the wall too quickly.
Applying a pigmented sealer (such as Resene Waterborne Sureseal) helps:
✅ Even out porosity – Prevents some areas from absorbing paste too quickly, which can cause uneven adhesion.
✅ Improve adhesion – Gives the wallpaper paste a stable surface to grip, reducing the risk of peeling or lifting.
✅ Prevent staining – Stops any existing paint, markings, or stains from bleeding through the wallpaper.
✅ Make future wallpaper removal easier – A sealed surface allows for cleaner removal when it’s time for a change.
